The following was created for ART 265: Intro to Printmaking Studio

Iris

Brief Description: The prompt for this piece was to create a monochromatic relief print from a linoleum block that played on the notion of repetition. Inspired by my skeleton tattoo on my forearm, I decided to sketch out and carve away a rib cage. I chose to add a heart made of tissue paper to each print to add a playful feel. When thinking of how to add to the space surrounding the rib cage, I decided to mirror blood droplets on the block’s top and bottom. This is where my title of the piece was drawn from. In the song “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls, there’s a lyric “You bleed just to know, you’re alive.” When thinking of our skeleton, we don’t necessarily think of it as a living part of us, but it is. It supports our living systems. This piece is about living in the moment and interconnectedness to oneself.
