The Rape of the Lock

Brief Description: My illustration includes key symbols from Alexander Pope’s The Rape of the Lock, focusing on the drama and excess of 18th-century high society. I used pen, pencil, and marker to show the drama of Pope’s symbols, which are Belinda’s lock of hair, the Sylphs, and the game of “Ombre,” representing vanity, moral weakness, and the trivial pursuits of the elite, respectively. I aimed to make the illustration just as nuanced and striking as Pope’s satirical work. It was super fun to illustrate!
